yes, meanings of words can change over time
another example that comes to mind is the word "chilling"
in the past it meant cooling off, or a cold person (in attitude or feeling), a chilling person was a negative thing
then it came to mean positive, as in relaxing, or a happy, content person
the first time i heard someone say "i am chilling" when they were just sitting quietly, i thought they were very angry!
so the common usage of words, and their meanings, change over time, and this eventually works its way into the formal or dictionary definition of words
