Clean them up, install Windows 2000 Pro on them, and they will be very usable. In my office, I have several computers to choose from.....even a 3GHz P4, but I use an old Pentium III 600MHz computer for all of my day-to-day usage needs -- even this response is being typed on it. Nothing wrong with them.

Set them up as web servers running Linux. Sell space on them to the public. You can put them at an ISP that offers co-location, so you don't have to pay for the bandwidth at home. You need more than DSL or Cable.

Install FreeBSD and set them up as firewalls, and sell them. Depending upon the capabilities that you provide in the firewall, you can sell them for thousands of dollars each. Check out M0n0wall (http://m0n0.ch/wall/)

I would love to have 5 extra Pentium III computers around.

Older computers that wont run the newest windows or newest games can be twice as powerful as a new computer if you switch the OS to Linux. Linux needs far less hardware to run.

Of course I wouldnt recommend it to do the same thing that you would use a new windows computer for. But for programming or for running an internet server, its great. It would do a much better job of those than your new windows machine if it tried to do them.

They are still capable of doing basic computer and internet things. Donate to a homeless shelter or veterans organization which can use to them to try and teach people new work skills. Your local high school might take them also. Or an old folks home (putting shutins into forums really wakes them up).

PLEASE whatever happens, do NOT throw them away. Electronics must be handled differently than normal trash. There are usually recycling centers or special dates for turning in electronics.

I agree here with most but Windows on older pc's is a pain and not everyone has Windows 2000 available. I would recommend Linux ...Ubuntu 7.04 easy to install and easy to set up on a home based network.
As to getting $100.00 each I don't think so but some people are taken advantage of easily but that is not the honest thing to do. Don't even consider upgrading them as it will be money that you won't re coup!
