Originally, "...like talking to a brick wall", it has evolved to, "...like talking to a post", etc., meaning not getting through to the person, or the person refused to listen.

It means that the chance to get an answer from the person is just the same than getting one from a door (none at all) because he is paying no attention to your conversation.

don't ask me - my dad says i'm as thick as a plank! sometimes he accuses my friends of being as dense as a piece of particle board, or as dumb as a doorknob!
