What is "Hell" from a philosopher prespective? Is Hell a real place? I've always think that Hell is such a horrific place that the human mind could not comprehend it. Could a man lose his sanity if he see Hell?

Hell (aka Naraka in Hinduism) does not exist only in the scriptures. Hell exists in the periphery of the sun where temperatures are considerably less. It is in such low temperatures the soul atman suffers for eternity! Both heaven and hell are interim stages in the cosmic life cycle of the soul atman within!

Whenever matching parents are not available on Mother Earth... the soul atman hibernates either in heaven or hell. In heaven if the residual balance of karma is positive and hell if negative! The moment matching parents become available on Mother Earth... the hibernating soul atman immediately manifests a new body... a new earthly life cycle!

Travel to heaven or hell in bodily form is never possible. Heaven exists in the core of sun where temperatures exceeded millions of degrees centigrade. It is in such high temperatures the soul atman feels comfortable. The journey in the human form is the most pleasant experience for the soul atman within.

Only in the human form the soul atman within liberates forever from the cycle of birth and death. Never from heaven or hell can the soul atman gain access to the kingdom of God (aka Baikuntha in Hinduism). Every soul atman manifests the human form to gain enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and finally salvation (moksha)... never otherwise!

Life in human form is the most pleasant experience for the soul atman. Why? It is for the simple reason that only as a human being the soul atman within regains its original pure pristine form. Having reached the end of the journey... the 8.4 millionth manifestation... the soul atman gains entry into the abode of God... the kingdom of God... a point of no return!

The concept of heaven and hell is beyond the comprehension of most human beings. Why? Only travelers on the path of spirituality understand this cosmic truth. The crux of cosmic life lays in the Bhagavad Gita... the most sacred Scripture of Hinduism existing on Mother Earth! Bhagavad Gita explicitly clarifies the concept of heaven and hell in entirety.

To avoid gaining a seat in heaven... one must overcome/shun the wanton desires... the greed for materialistic riches. Dominated by the ego within most human beings indulge in negative karma that leads one towards a life in hell. A negative residual balance of karma results from our performing bad karma all the time.

Indulgence in positive karma and gaining virtues must be the absolute goal of life... come whatever may! Only then one can ensure a seat in heaven! More on Hell and Heaven - http://www.godrealized.org/understanding_the_whole_concept_of_heaven.html

Hell yes.

Religious philosophers, of course, ponder the aspects of an actual God created type Hell.

However, even among the Existentialist/Agnostic crowd, the concept of Hell has great resonance. As in people who make their own hell.

Deep in the human heart is the wish that the SOBs who've made our lives...er... hell, will wind up roasting over some kind of karmic flame.

The question of Hell view insanity though is one of metaphysical whimsy. No proof of Hell exists so trying to gage it's effect on the mind is a bit silly.

"Hell is other people.” Jean-Paul Sartre (French existentialist philosopher and writer, 1905-1980)

“We must prefer real hell to an imaginary paradise.”
Simone Weil (French social Philosopher, Mystic and Activist in the French Resistance during World War II. 1909-1943)

"The hell to be endured hereafter, of which theology tells, is no worse than the hell we make for ourselves in this world by habitually fashioned our characters in the wrong way." William James, Philosopher

'Hell is Truth seen Too Late' (Thomas Hobbes, Political Philosopher, 1588 - 1679)

“Here we may reign secure, and in my choice
To reign is worth ambition though in hell:
Better to reign in hell, than serve in heaven.”
John Milton (1608 – 74) English poet and philosopher

This one I find particularly interesting:

“Maybe this world is another planet's Hell.”  Aldous Huxley (English novelist and philosopher 1894-1963)

'Hell' can be a lot of things. I don't think of it so much as a 'place' as a 'state of mind' or 'state of being' that's just totally unbearable.

Patton said, "War is Hell." And I've certainly seen a few people lose their sanity the first time they were in a firefight. Or lose it permanently after a few of them.

hell is a place where you are in the midst of a burning flame and you suffer and feel pain daily. if you where a christian laying your life down to be as like those that you go to, in order to help in the process of saving them from their evil acts, you would be in a dark cloud. you would be burning the whole time that you are there. you would be in pain as a woman giving birth. it hurts to be there and to see the things that are before you, and to do the things that you have to do to be able to be there. i do the things that i wish not to do, so that i MIGHT be able to reach you and guide you into a better life and to better understand you and your way of life, so that we may be more able to reach others in your condition. i lay my good life down that i may save those in the world of your life. i do that that i have to do in order that we MIGHT be able to reach you and others who live in the likeness of your ways, those of your world...i have entered hell for a moment, in oreder that i may see heaven through the rising of onother by my own work in t he world

Unless you know the way out, it is here. When you do, it becomes 'purgatory'.
