There really isn't a specific number. It is more based on the time it spends atop the list as the best seller for that particular week. In America, there are really two lists that count. One is NY Times and the other is Amazon. For NY Times, you have to stay atop the list for a week. For Amazon, it is just a couple days. There are "tricks" people use to get to the top of the Amazon list in their particular genre for the required period. Then from that point on, they can list themselves as being a National Bestselling Author on whatever they write. I know one particular author who did it with a really brilliant idea. It got his book to the top of one Amazon list and earned him the title of National Bestselling Author. There are some very interesting secrets behind becoming an Amazon bestseller and if you use them properly, the title is yours. I am sure it works the same in the UK. Pax - C

It's not really something that is determined by a set number of sales, a book getting onto the "bestsellers list" is contingent on a number of factors. First and foremost, a books sales in a given week are compared to the sales of all the other books also sold. So say a book only sells about 1 million copies, it's conceivable that it could still reach bestsellers status if the sales of all other books were slagging.

Bestseller in the sense in not only the number copies being sold but also the popularity of the book and the author. there are more factors, I don't wanna go deep.
But bestseller commonly if your say, it should be more then 50,000 - 1million copies atleast.
