I have a comforter that was given to me and it has not been used for years and has Florida stains on it which is essentially mildew I guess. What is the best way to clean it up?

Mold and mildew is a bacterial growth which can be killed by using bleach.

The problem with chlorine bleach is that it removes color...so if this comforter isn't white I'd use oxygen bleach (oxy clean) to work on the stains. Form a paste and work on it with a toothbrush to remove then launder as usual.

soak the stain in vinegar, and water for 15 minutes. 1 cup of vinegar and 2 cups of water. Then clean as usual. the acid in the vinegar will attack the mildew, before washing put a few squirts of dawn on the stain and rub it into the stain. and then wash.

Spray it generously with Shout or SpraynWash then ....... wash it at the laundry mat in the large capacity washer with a large amount of color safe bleach. It will kill it. You may want to pre-soak it a bit before washing.
