Hi Nicole,
I think the Banjo is an instrument that conveys many moods.
If you ever seen any Ken Burns documentarys he uses the Banjo
and the Dulcimer in a very poetic and sad way.
For me, there is some great songs out their in Rock, Country,
That are very up-beat and the Banjo is the featured instrument.

Yes, because I think of "Deliverance" and that whole movie in a nutshell is just sad. Actually, every time I hear the banjo, it's an eerie feeling.

Any instrument can produce the desired effect in the hands of the person who has a soul and can transmit what the music is trying to convey. Sad, happy, joy and grief.

I guess in the typical upbeat sound, I don't think you can't get sad.
But of course, some people get sad over things that most people wouldn't. Everything is just so subjective.
