I recently installed zone alarm onto my desktop, I'm using XP, SP2, and it's really slowed down my shut down time. It hangs for ages. Has anyone experience this, if so, is there anything I need to do in the settings to speed up the shutdown time. It used to take appro. 30 seconds, if that, to shutdown before I installed zone alarm.

Shutdown ZoneAlarm before you shutdown the PC.

If the result is the same then you know that ZA isn't the problem.

ZA tends to be the last thing running because it is protecting you all the time. Broadband is particularly affected as you are always potentially online.

A little longer shutting down is probably worth the risks of NOT having ZoneAlarm.

Very odd ..
.. I use Zone Alarm with XP sp2 patched up to date & I've never had a shut down problem ...

... actaully, 30 seconds is already a slow shut down = it takes my PC less time than that to do a total restart cycle ..

I suggest you check what tasks are running during shut-down = especially focus on whatever is taking time to close ..

That is a usual case with most security software like Zone Alarm. Security software has to add a ton of data to your computer registry, most of this data is duplication and updates information which is unnecessary for your computer to function. However, you computer to must search the hundreds of registry files every time it shuts down in order to keep a proper configuration. You can cut down on the shut down time by cutting down on the files in your registry. Get a good registry cleaner and clean and organize the registry. The site below has some software that offer free scans. Hope this helps!

I agree with Steve B. Close all programmes (except ZA) before closing down and see what happens. I have been using ZA for a long time now and never had a problem with it. Even if it is slowing down 30 secs is not a long time to wait considering that without this security you may not be able to use your comp properly again. best of luck.
