My adult painted lays her clutch in the water all the time. No matter what I do to try and prevent this, I always fail.
There was alot of oil and it did stink. It takes me forever to clean up the tank.
As for the green color....
I have never come across green.. this might be her feces that she is kicking around and scattering. Her stools might be lose during this time!
You need to learn when she is about to lay a clutch as females do this anyway without a male around.
My painted becomes much more active, stops eating and becomes alot more aggressive. She hiss's at me during this time and tends to scratch at the corner of the tank.
Hopefully you will learn when she is about to lay a clutch. My painted refuses to drop her clutch in soil. I have tried for many years to get her in the habit of going in soil for a couple of hours during this time. As soon as I put her back in the water she drops the clutch.
It can become frustrating when cleaning the tank that is oil based...believe me..

Female Red-ear Sliders, like all other turtles, lay eggs on the land*. The leave a lot of waste products in the water, however.
Turtles are very messy pets, and it is STRONGLY recommended that you use a good, strong filter to help keep the water clean.
Try this article- http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/waterquality.htm for more about filtration and water quality.
*To be accurate, stressed and old females will lay eggs in water- they will look like small, rubbery, streaked, oval chicken eggs- but will not be fertile or ever hatch unless they are laid on land in a soil nest.

Theres a few things...
first of all most importantly how old is your turtle...
if i am not mistaken red ears dont mate until they are fully grown at about three years the earlest.. also they wont mate if not in the proper inviroment
second are you sure you have a female and a male......
make sure you do some homework on your turtle so you'll understand where i am comming from... good luck....

They probably won't lay every year, but it's possible. Some female turtles don't, and some do.

Is your turtle laying eggs in the water?
If so, it shouldn't be. It should be transferred to a nesting site.
You should be using a filter.
