hey Rats Tails! Smashing Pumpkins' siamese dream is the first album i ever bought in my life as a band member, so i'd go for that. But don't overlook gish. after that, the band evolved in my expectations and became even better yes, 'Meloncollie' is as excellent as the rest. You chose a great band to learn the genre's manifest sound from.
Smashing pumpkins inspired our music group to never do covers on all live gigs.

Any of the first 3 would be a good choice. My personal favorite is Siamese Dream, but Mellon Collie and Gish are also great albums. After that they start to slowly decline in quality, though there are still a few good tracks on the later albums.

Trust me on this one, Gish all the way. The Smashing Pumpkins were really special on this album and haven't quite come close to it since. Even when the tracks got mellow, they were still incredible like on Crush or Rhinoceros. If you can only own one, this should be it.

You could flip a coin between "Siamese Dream" which is a more straight-forward rock album, and "Mellon Collie" which is a more experimental album with a lot of variety. Both are top quality.

I think that their best album is Gish. After that, I would suggest Siamese Dream then Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness. I am not a fan of anything beyond Melancholy.

I would get either Gish or Siamese Dream. Probably Gish, it's just cooler, top to bottom their best for my money, although there are some great tracks on Siamese Dream. It's just a little more hit and miss in my opinion.

Such an awesome album! It's on most critics' lists for the best albums of all time.
