Very complex, too long to explain here. Plato's philosophy is much more complicated than Socrates, who simply said "the unexamined life is not worth living". Plato refused to believe in experimentation, but believed that all discoveries should be made apriori. You want to go to Wikipedia for more details.

The question would need to be more specific for me to provide a more detailed answer. But let's just say that Plato believed in Ideas/Ideals called Forms which somehow obtain in the intelligible or noetic realm of being. These Forms shape Platonic political theory and his view of aesthetics as well as his ethical system.
