Travel agents are very helpful and most can match internet pricing like Orbitz or Travelocity for airfare and packages. Most charge fees for airline tickets but not for packages or cruises...and on international tickets, we (travel agents) use consolidators who will ONLY sell to travel agents for discounted airfare. If you're someone that wants to be in control of everything, definitely book on the internet but be aware that if you have any problems with your internet bookings, especially on the big sites like Expedia, it can be almost impossible to get in contact with a LIVE person to assist you. I have friends that routinely call me to try to fix their internet bookings, which I do NOT. (And can't, because I can only touch bookings that I've made).

Travel Agent Cost

Travel agents cost. How long do you plan to be away?

In the old days (before the internet) travel agents were very useful. Since you have access to a computer, you can look up most anything you want to know on line. You can book hotels, find addresses, even print maps. There are a number of free tourist information exchange sites where you can swap stories, suggestions, and recommendations.

I'm planning a trip to russia next year, which requires applying for a visa. But we're going to do the whole trip from on line--train schedules, bus routes, etc. And France is better connected than Russia.

Depending on how long you plan to stay in France, you may wish to consider renting an apartment.

If you go through a travel agent, any costs you pay to the travel agent are all part of the final cost. Travel agents can be useful for larger groups and for cruises because they can get some great bulk discount rates on air fare and usually get the best prices on cruises. But if you're just talking about a few people going on a regular vacation, you can do about the same or better planning everything yourself.

Travel agents do cost money, but sometimes they are cheaper... they charge you more than they pay, but sometimes this is still less than you would pay by setting up the trip on your own.

Airlines often give them a cheaper rate on tickets than you can find on websites yourself. Agents often have cheaper rates on hotels as well due to their contracts with the hotels. Travel agents often have access to package deals as well which include airfare and hotel: sometimes a package deal can be cheaper than just an airline ticket!!

I plan a lot of travel for authors and sales people at work, along with my own personal trips. I have found that sometimes the travel agent is cheaper and sometimes making my own arrangments is cheaper.

I recommend checking with 2-3 travel agents (they often have access to different deals and will quote you different prices for exactly the same thing) and getting quotes from them, and checking on your own through the web. This way you will find the best deal for you.

Use a travel agent. Some of us specialize in Disney. I have been there 22 times. Booking yourself is NOT cheaper. If you want to stay at a Disney resort, no one will discount the land portion - the only discount may be the air. The Disney Resort does not give special pricing to anyone. The advantage to using an agent will be in their knowledge of the product.

No if, no but. 90% of the time you get better prices from the internet, and a lot of time by a very very wide margin.

But, there is a big But.

You got to willing to spend the time, and check out various sites.

If you are talking about flights only, stick to the above period.

If you are talking about packages and need advise, I would still use the internet and print media to find out what I am looking for. But, if you can get hold of an agent who has been to where you are looking to go, she or he may have a few points for you.

Last but not least, when you found your best price, also check with a couple of agencies, for that remaining 10% of th times.

travel agents work on commission, sometimes cruises pay this, or resorts to promote them...
better to plan it yourself, use internet guides like what to se there.
plan your days so you don't overwhelm yourself...
keep it simple! food is sometime a problem ask locals to recommend places, hotels resvations usely req down payment before six arrival the first day never use your card as much... you may end up with some unwanted charges!! and have to work with card company's to straighten out! later.
think about gas costs when planning...

It is my experience that travel agents do not charge YOU...theymake their money form the airlines and hotels. They can be very helpful in planning international travel, especially if you haveno experience in that. Call a couple ans ASK them. You can do your own research too. But, do investigate using a travel agent and get the accurate ifo directly from them.

With the internet you can plan your whole trip without a travel agent. You can book your flight online and therefore search yourself for the best and cheapest flight... You can go to "google earth" and see all the sights you want to see as well as photos.

Also search online about hotels, most of them have photos and maps... really easy and you will have fun with the planning and you will be even more exciting to go...

Have a good trip!
