You better get it done in court unless you want to still be legally married! All the preachers, ministers, rabbi's and imams will be looking from outside the jail cell and say...
I told you polygamy is illegal in the United States!

First,if you didnt obtain a marriage license permit in the first place then you dont have a legally binding marriage now. You can have the marriage in a church or backyard or wherever, but without that permit its not legal. Religious divorces are nolonger legalin this country so you will have to go thru a divorce court to get your divorce provided your marriage is legal to begin with. Without a divorce from the first marriage , any and all marriages after the first one are null and void and thus illegal. So figure out whether your marriage is legal ad binding then decde if you want the divorce and then decide if another marriage is in your future

If never got a civil marriage license in any state there is a good chance you are not married at all. A religious service may not constitute a marriage if not backed up by a license.
Contact an attorney to be sure.
Good luck.

First off if you didn't get a marriage license then you never were legally married. Even people that get married in a church as opposed to a civil ceremony are required by the state to have a license.... I'm shocked that you actually found a clergy to do the ceremony. You can confirm this by simply calling your local courthouse.

You can't get a 'religious divorce' in the United States that's binding. You can have a divorce that's sanctioned as sound by the Catholic Church...you can have a civil divorce and never have the church know anything about it; but, there are no longer any religious divorces that I'm aware of that would allow you to remarry according to the U.S. codes or the criminal justice system's sections applying to polygamy

Did you get a marriage license? Then it's registered with the state and needs to be legally ended.
If you don't have a marriage license, then you weren't legally married in the first place... but you better check with a lawyer just to be sure.
