If a QB becomes a permanent starter, he's not a backup. Tom Brady is a starter, not a backup. Steve Young did not get into the Hall of Fame as a backup. I want to know who the best BACKUP QB of all time is.

Earl Morral - Baltimore Colts backup to Johnny Unitas in the late 60's and early 70's. When the Colts went to Super Bowl 3, Morral took them there after a Unitas injury - and he played an active role in their Super Bowl 5 winning season.

#2 has to be George Blanda of the Raiders.

Steve Beuerlein, every team he went to to be the backup QB did good. He also put up some impressive numbers for a backup.

Young is out because he started for so long. Frank Reich was the back up for Jim Kelly who came in for the Bills when they were down 31-0 at the half to the Oilers, came back and won it. He had a 40+ point comeback for Maryland against U Miami a few years earlier. Earl Morral was another good one back in the late 60's

Steve Young, Niners.

Kurt Warner, Rams, 1999.

Need I explain?

Frank Reich wasn't a bad backup to Jim Kelly either.

Jeff Hostettler- NYG Super Bowl XXV winner. Filled in when Phil Simms went down with a knee injury in the middle of 1990 season against Buffalo, but we all know who had the last laugh.

Doug Flutie (Bills, Chargers, Patriots, etc.....)

He was always ready to come in and play. He took the helm on a few occassions and went to the playoffs in Buffalo, before being pulled for no damn reason. He played a big game for a small guy.

Tom Brady, Patriots...No one expected him to do much out of Michigan as a late rounder...but he lead the Pats to the Super Bowl after Drew Bledsoe got injured...3 Super Bowls later, they are saying...OOPS...

Steve Young, 49ers...He won a Super Bowl after getting out of Joe Montana's shadow...

I'd have to say Tom Brady. He was a perpetual backup in New England, but he got his shot and look at him now.
