Is this a desktop monitor (CRT - like an older television), flat screen monitor, or laptop display? If it is a desktop CRT, disconnect the monitor from the pc. Disconnect the power source from the monitor. Push and hold the power button on the pc to completely dissipate any electricity from any capacitors. Plug everything back in and turn the pc and monitor back on. It probably won't hurt to degauss the monitor at this time. Cross your fingers, but CRT monitors have a large magnet in them that may have been permanently messed up.

Your screwed for the most part. It sounds like you have a CRT and you might be able to degauss it but for the most part you just screwed the tube up. You're lucky the integrity of the HD isn't boned. Do not put a strong magnet anywhere near a computer. You can erase a hard drive like that too.

Check the monitor menu by pressing the buttons "On the Monitor"
Select the option for Degauss, or press the button with the little magnet on it (if you have one)

You should have a "degauss" feature for the screen. If that doesn't work, the screen is permanently damaged and you either live with what you have or replace it.

Try degaussing your screen if it's an old CRT monitor.
