If you're trying to conceive your first baby you should absolutely be taking pre-natal vitamins. They contain more folic acid (a type of B vitamin) than a regular vitamin for women, and that is very important in pregnancy for preventing neural tube defects like spina bifida, but especially in early pregnancy when the majority of development is going on at a very rapid pace.

An over the counter pre-natal is probably fine, but make an appointment with your family doctor or ob/gyn or midwife to discuss your plans, and to make sure you're in good health before you try to conceive.

I had been on prenatal vitamins for the six months before I got pregnant...and I will continue to be on them throughout this pregnancy.

Prenatals just give you insurance, so that if you get pregnant without knowing it, you can rest assured that you have the proper nutrients already in your body to sustain a pregnancy.

Good luck, and don't buy the cheapest ones out there. Also, make sure they have at least 1mg of folic acid.

Yes. You SHOULD take them 3-6 months before trying to conceive because the folic acid will build up and protect the baby better. Spina Bifida (A serious neural tube disorder) happens within the first month of pregnancy, before most women know that they are pregnant, and folic acid helps prevent this.

Yes, when you are ttc it is a good idea to start prenatal vitamins so that your levels are high enough during the first few weeks that you don't know you are pregnant yet.

You can and should....prenatal vitamins have extra folic acid that women trying to concieve, or are already pregnant, need (helps prevent spinal cord defects). This is particularily important in the first trimester....most peoples diets don't contain nearly enough folic acid.

Why would you want to take prenatal vitamins if you're not pregnant. I'm sure they wont harm you because theyre just vitamins. But it's not like they're going to help you any. Those vitamins are to help a womans body during & right after pregnancy. They'll serve you no purpose if you aren't in that category.

You can take prenatal pills even though you are not pregnant. It tells you in the directions that women who are not pregnant should only take one a day. and pregnant women should take two.

Yes. That's what all my friends were suggesting to me because we were trying to conceive. You can get them over the counter at Wal-Mart, Wallgreens' any pharmacy.

Also another thing that helped us was following my ovulation calendar. Talk to your dr for any other suggestions.

Good luck!!
