Toll roads are just an alternative Tax.
I don't feel toll roads are a bad idea, they just make the people who use the toll roads pay for it as opposed to spreading the cost of the roads across everyone in the region.
Personally, I think toll roads are a good idea, because only those that use the toll roads pay for it. Now if it could only guarantee a tax break...

toll roads, when first concieved were a good idea because the tolls were a financial way for states to pay for the roads over a period of time on "borrowed" funding. Kentucky is the only state that has held up its side of the bargain, that being when the money was paid back for the building of the roads, in their case parkways, the tolls would be lifted. i believe there are no more toll roads (parkways) in Kentucky today.
the new toll roads that states are proposing are coming from one source only, crooked politicians who over the past 20yrs took money from their states budget that was earmarked for road building/repairs and used if friviously someplace else. now those states are broke, their roadways are junk, their people r complaining and the only way to repair the roads, in their opinion is either install tolls on those existing roads (I-80 in Pa is a good example thats a hotbed topic today) or sell the roads, their infrastructure to foreign countries (like Indiana did with their tollroad and chicago did with their skyway) for a huge check today, but in the case of Indiana, nothing after that huge check for 75yrs, the length of the lease. think about what indiana did, they got a lump sum of 3.85 billion dollars for a 75yr lease...if they had just kept the tolls themselves, how much revenue do u think they would have had in 75yrs...now cintra will pocket that cool profit off the backs of hard working Americans driving those roads. since cintra's takeover there have been 2 toll increases with three more coming, as specified in the lease. 75yrs, your childrens children will see the end of that lease, not you.
It was very interresting to hear Gov. Daniels chuckle at a news confrence after the lease was signed when he described how easy it was to push this deal past the great people of Indiana and was suprised at how fast he got it done...but then again at the next election those same great people of Indiana put all of his staff that were up for re-election out on the street with no job, wonder if Gov. Daniels will have his job after the upcoming governors election.
there are other ways to gain revenue 2 build/repair roads in US states, but all the governors and politions can see is that big up-front check, not the big picture that looks farther into the future.

Logically, I think they are a bad idea, because if you really do calculate how much money they take in daily. Where I live in Miami, FL there are tolls everywhere, and you never see any work done, and believe me they make a lot of money of those tolls.
