I didn't ask if they are admissable as evidence in court.
If they are so rubbish and not worthy, why do the great unwashed, single mothers, housewives and anyone else not at work, believe them everytime Jeremy Kyle or Trisha Goddard uses the results from them?
Are you saying all those chav dads, proven as the biological fathers to chav kids have been hood winked into maintenance?

They chickened out because they didn't want to be backed into a corner. They were all for taking the test until they were advised only to do so by the PJ. Very crafty seeing as the PJ do not allow it..... so the Mc's don't need to do it. How convenient.there is so much spin it's a wonder they aren't all dizzy. I read now that some crack pot working for the McCanns many weeks ago supposedly followed a dna trail from the complex to the beach (15 mins away).The trail was then lost at the water edge. So now the McCanns are saying that Maddy was definately abducted and taken away in a boat. they didn't mention that moored not far away are boats owned by British people and that Gerry could have paid off one of them to dispose of the body out at sea in a bag full of rocks,,, never to be found again EDIT VIJACK..... even if the lie detector is not admissible in court If I was innocent I would have arranged a private one under strict conditions if only to satisfy the baying public. Nothing to hide , nothing to fear.

I honestly don't know if they can. Not talking of the McCann case when I say this but can you imagine if you were accused of something and you knew you were completely innocent and somehow the Lie Detector said you were lying. I really would be afraid and nervous taking this test and you wonder if that could get readings wrong. Again perhaps the same thing could be said if you were confident in your innocence and still give a guilty reading.Hope I'm never in the positon. It makes good reality TV but that's about it as far as I am concerned.

Can't speak for the UK, but here in the U.S. the results of a polygraph test are inadmissible in court, regardless of the results. Polygraph tests are simply not reliable. I actually saw a test administered to a guy who was schooled in how the polygraph works. Well, by doing simple things like closing his eyes and controlling his breathing, he was able to lie all the way through the test and still "pass." Apparently it also has a lot to do with the person interpreting the polygraph results, and since there is no recognized standard the polygraph is pretty much useless.

No, they are not getting lie detector tests, they are getting paternity tests...and you made a very generalised view of people who watch these shows, ie single mothers etc, quite unfair dont you think? What about people who actually work but just happen to be at home at that time? You clearly need an attitude change.

So who's to say the change in the 'psychological condition' relates to a lie? I had this conversation with a friend who studied psychology and we both agreed it's not that reliable, a particular question could provoke a reaction which may show on the test and they will deem it to be a lie but it could be a number of things that provoke the reaction. Sorry, I don't think they can prove guilt or innocence

Polygraphs offer no proof, but they simply offer bits of additional evidence, such as someone not making eye contact, or nervous body language, or "suspicious" behavior.
No one should rely on one, single technology as absolute "proof" of guild or innocence. Ultimately, however, it will have to be human judgement used to make a decision to prosecute, acquit, or continue investigation. Even "eyewitness" testimony has often been suspect, and subject to question.

Using them in cases put on TV for light entertainment is a world away from 'proving' anything.
And parental cases are proven by DNA not a polygraph.

Lie detector tests are meaningless. They are highly inaccurate, easily faked, and subject to multiple interpretations. They are almost as accurate as palm reading or reading tea leaves, but not quite.
Why do you think that they are not admissible in court?

in some cases it has also been proven that an individual with knowledge of body language and related behaviourisms can actually pass a lie detector, but it is apparently 99% accurate,

It has been written in some essays on espionage that it would be possible to cheat on a lie detector thanks to special training.
Also, psychopaths would be naturally capable to cheat unnoticed since they do not express any feeling of guilt when lying.
