Is it just me or is a pap smear the worst thing ever? I went for my first exam yesterday and it was awful. I didn't want togo but I had to to get birth control for college. They had me lie with my butt right on the egde of a table with my legs spread and up in the air in crutches so they could see everything. The doctor then put a needle inside me ? and then pushed her fingers right inside me. I am not sure this is the right, why do you have to feel so humiliated? Does this happen every year or was it just cause it was my first visit?

THE FIRST TIME I WENT, I WAS NERVOUS. I DIDN'T FEEL VIOLATED BECAUSE I KNEW IT WAS FOR ME. I NOW HAVE A MALE OBGYN. I HAD A FEMALE BEFORE. I LIKE MALES BETTER. THEY BELONG DOWN THERE. A WOMAN DOESN'T. SO BY ME THINKING THIS WAY, I AM MORE RELAXED. HE IS GOOD AT WHAT HE DOES. THE BEST THING THAT HE DOES, IS TO TALK TO ME WHILE HE IS TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS DOWN THERE. BY HIM HAVING CONVERSATION WITH ME, IT TAKES MY MIND OFF OF WHAT HE IS DOING DOWN THERE AND MAKES ME CONCENTRATE ON WHAT HE IS SAYING TO ME. BEFORE YOU KNOW, HE IS TELLING ME THAT HE IS DONE. I SUGGEST THAT YOU TRY TO GET IN A CONVERSATION DURING YOUR NEXT PAPSMEAR. RELAX, YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF YOURSELF FOR GOING. ALOT OF WOMAN DONT GET CHECKED OUT. JUST THINK ABOUT IT DIFFERENTLY WHEN YOU DO IT. MAYBE THINK ABOUT, HOW THIS COULD BE SAVING YOUR LIFE. LOOK AT THE BRIGHT SIDE, AT LEAST HE IS NOT STICKING ALL THAT UP YOUR BUTTE. LOL!

sucks doesn't it? well, it's not going to be any different, but you may become more comfortable as time goes on. if you don't feel comfortable with your doctor, you may want to try another one when you go off to college. i went to one doctor who was very rough and had cold hands - it was awful, and i ended up spotting for a day after the visit.
the best thing is to not focus on it. remember, this is a life-saving appointment and you should NEVER skip it because it makes you feel icky (believe me, we all feel that way). having your yearly exam is the best way to avoid more invasive procedures later on.

I know it's invasive and icky, but there's just no other way to examine what needs to be examined; otherwise they could miss important things like cysts and TUMORS.

No reason to feel humiliated. The doctor has probably seen about ten thousand vaginas and cervixes by now, and they could be elbows and knees for all she cares.

It happens every year. There is no needle, it was a Q-tip to obtain a smear to make sure you dont have cancer, STD, or any other problem. Whats the big deal, you dont mind assuming the position for intercourse.

Totally a normal visit. You NEED to get it done every year to make sure you are healthy too.

As long as you didn't feel both hands on your knees while he was probing, it's all good.
