By nurturing very young children in sports are we not going down the route of the old Eastern Block countries took and we so much despised? All so we a few individuals might get a gold. Isn't it better to give our children a healthy balance of sporting experience rather than coaching them to the point of obsession in one sport?

The trouble is one of the reasons we don't succeed at many sports is because most of the children come to it too late, do we say this when Manchester United or any other top football team take on a very young player, no we don't, so i don't see the difference. It's like anything in life the earlier you get them, if they have talent and are willing, and that is the key, then we should be encouraging them. It's also why we are dunces at languages because children are not taught early enough.

tbh all performers that are seen to have potential are often seen as young as 5yrs old, this is because it allows adequate training to the point of creating an elite performer, if they were to spot them at an older age it is alot more difficult to train. That is why they drill the performers one specific skill / sport so much it becomes there dominant response, otherwise there would be no elite performers, on the otherhand the amount of elite performers we produce isn't of great significance but that is down to natural skill these kids are born with. You can only push them so far.
