I wash everything that will come into contact with my baby. Blankets, burp rags, towels... everything... They treat clothes with chemicals that can be very harmful to your baby. Especially if they are from China (most are) Not to mention you have no idea what they came into contact with when they were shipped to the store... Or even who picked them up off the rack and had the flu! You really should wash everything! I know what you mean about wanting to leave the tags on, I don't know the sex of my baby... I am just washing the neutral stuff to start with. Then after the baby is born, I will wash the rest.... Good Luck!

You should at least wash the onesies--the clothing that directly touches your baby's trunk. I personally wore a new shirt once at age 9 or so without washing it first and whatever they treated the shirt with irritated my nipples so badly that it looked like I had B or C cup breasts--mind you, I was flat chested before putting the shirt on. I think the baby should be fine with pants and outer clothing, but for sure onesies because they'll be touching your baby's nipples, as well as the umbilical cord stump which has blood vessels still in it. Better safe than sorry. Just do a load of laundry the day baby is born so you know what you can wash.

Yes, I wash all clothes for my family and myself before wearing. There are chemicals that need to be washed off especially for baby. I just get clothes as I need them and wash them. The stuff that is too big for dd I keep the tags on for now, then when it comes time, I throw it in the wash. If I don't like something, I take it back before I cut the tags and wash it. No biggie.

I did, because newborn's skin is very sensitive and could get a rash or rxn to anything that is on the clothing. It makes the clothes softer and more cozy for baby...and smells better too! =)
PS, I didn't wash ALL clothes at first, just a few days worth of clothes, that way- if baby is big or small, you can take back clothing or exchange them for something else.

I don't wash new clothes for myself any of my kids or for new babies, currently expecting baby number 4 this xmas and have enough to do washing essentials without making extra work for myself. I tend to keep items stored with tage so that they can be returned etc if no use, I also have found from experience that some items get ruined/damaged/never looks the same even after one wash so dont like risking it!
That new crisp feeling you only get the first time something is worn, many things are never the same again!

I would wash some, I think they feel softer after a wash. I know what you mean about sizes, my first baby wore newborns for a month, there were some things we never used but could not return. I am being more conservative this time!

I, personally, wash new clothes so that any dirt or dust that may have accumulated on it in the store is gone. If they come in a plastic package, I still wash them because who knows what's in that plastic?! I don't trust new baby clothes - it's just a safety precaution on my part.

You know I never though about that, I knew other people hadn't tried on the baby outfits (more than likely) so I never thought of washing them, Of course if I bought something from a garage sale I would but other than that no

I wouldn't - I did with my first, then I had twins born prematurely and they were in icu for a long time. I was very curious to the workings of the icu and asked them what the blankets they were used and wrapped in were washed in and they told me it was commercial grade laundry detergent like all hospital sheets, gowns, towels. So anyway, if it was good enough for them for their first 6 weeks, I decided I could wait to wash all their other new stuff until after they came home and then I just used Surf like I do with all our other laundry.

I have never washed new baby clothes before wear. I never had a problem with it. I would wash clothes that I have in storgage, or second hand clothes, but not brand new baby clothes.
