Vegetarians don't eat meat because of cruelty to animals. I've been thinking about this. If the majority agreed with Vegetarians and stopped eating meat then there would be no reason for farmers to keep cattle. Would this not mean denying those cattle their chance of life and therefore they would simply become extinct. My conclusion therefore is that eating meat is less crues than not eating them. Any vegans with a thought?

I don't see how eating meat can save cows. Sure they are good for a lot of things. I can make a lamp shade out of a person too, doesn't mean we'll start herding homeless people up and sending them to slaughter houses. If you really think about how much water and grain is needed to actually feed the cows that we eat. You can see that we could use that water and wheat on people rather then cows or any other animal for that fact.
The other thing is, we really don't need leather. Anyone heard of pleather. It looks exactly the same. As does fake fur. O sure it's not as luxurious, but who really thinks about what they where. Hardly anyone thinks about the kind of impact they make on the Earth by what they buy and consume.
Also all the diseases that animals get because I guess it's cheaper to feed cows to other cows or chickens. I've never heard anyone getting streptococcus from eating soy or ecoli from an apple. there are so many terrible viruses lurking in meat. I know if it's properly cooked blah blah blah, but how many people actually pay attention to that when people like there steaks still mooing.
Plus cattle production is massive, and costs so much money, it really is a drain on our economy trying to sustain all of them. Plus actually attempting to keep there population in control and breeding them properly, when we could just let them breed naturally.
anyway my point is that I can't imagine how not killing an animal or causing that animal to die in accordance with supply and demand is crueler then actually being responsible for that animals death.

I liked this question Andy, gives me something to rant about :)

O yeah and about the plants feeling pain, sure they do, but if you want me to take that much consideration into what I'm eating, then I wouldn't be able to eat anything, good argument on that one whatever

also by ranting I never instead to change peoples opinions. Eat meat if you want I'm not one of those freaks who protest or throw blood on fur coats. Do what you want.

Cows would become extinct? I think thats unlikely. Veggies are never going to be the majority because people like the taste of meat too much, but we also use cows for other products.

And to respond to one of the other answers - eating plants is different because they dont have a central nervous system and so dont feel pain.

I am with Andy..I love meat to much to give it up. And well I hate most vegetables. But to each his own as long as they don't start preaching to me about eating meat. I met a Vegetarian that didnt eat eggs because it was using animals to produce food or drink milk because it came from an animal yet they were quite preachy about breast is best when feeding our babies.

These cattle are bred just to eat and have an unnatural life before they are slaughtered when still young.
This is not doing them a favour and it would be better not to breed them.
If you must have cattle just have wild herds such as at Chillingham

i think its good for you to be a vegetarian but i think animals like cows, pigs and turkeys all that jazz people are always eating them everywhere i go and the butchers is a different story so they would become extinct as people are eating each and everyone of them.

In India cows are sacred and can wander around aimlessly. I can't see herds of cattle wandering around the M25!

We don't just use them for meat, how about leather goods for a starter, milk from dairy cattle, and sundry other by products, that's the trouble people forget that too.

I thought vegetarians didn't eat meat because they love life. Well, plants are alive too, aren't they? Wouldn't that make it wrong to kill a plant for food too?

Your first assumption is wrong (regarding why vegetarians don't eat meat) therefore the rest of your argument falls apart.
