does any one know how i would go about getting an idea pattened

You hire a patent attorney and tell him/her about your idea. The attorney gives you an initial opinion as to whether your idea is in fact patentable (it may or may not be). Then, he/she researches existing patents (or, as patent lawyers say, "prior art") to see if anyone has patented something that looks like your idea before. If your idea appears original, the attorney will prepare a patent application and send it to the patent office. The patent office will probably review it in about three years (this is how long their backlog is) and either issue a patent or deny one. The likely to cost of all this madness to you is a few thousand dollars.

First of all it's called a patent. Go to http://www.uspto.gov/ and follow their instructions.
