If they don't answer, won't it be evident that they have something to hide?

If you want to take a lie detector test then you have to answer each and every questions asked. Some people seem to be under the impression that lie detector tests are not viable. it depends how they are done. Usually you begin by asking easy questions such as your name is (Whatever your name is). There will be anything between 3 and more of those questions to establish how the person reacts when answering. basically which side of the brain they use when telling the truth. Then it makes it easier to tell when the person is not being truthful. it's nothing like what you see in some TV programmes. in fact it's more complicated than that.
We were given one such test in our psychology department at University and it was to help us learn more about not only body language but also spontaneous reactions.
Anyone wishing to undertake a lie detector test should be aware that they cannot pick their questions! No matter how well they may rehearse possible questions there is no possibility to avoid the fact that some questions are asked in such a way you can either answer yes or no.
I know a few people rubbished these tests but, and when i saw them on some TV programmes ... They made me laugh! They were nothing at all like a proper test and when it comes to the case you mention, it should be a proper test.

Sadly this standard of question is typical of the level of understanding by many posted on the Mc Cann incident and flags the need for amateur sleuths to back off and let the experts come to a conclusion.
Since the machine measures heart rate etc, not answering a question makes no difference! The machine still measures the response to your question. Also, would one be so stupid to agree to a lie detector test and not answer questions?
A quote from your question
"but have told PJs they will not answer any of their Qs even though by doing so they are clearly not ..."
and your source for this little nugget of information?
Finally, lie detectors are not accurate and hence not used in Europe.

Whether you were just having a laugh or not you have made a really good point. How on earth can they take a lie detector test when they refused to answer the pjs questions in the first place. Unless of course they state which questions are to be asked.

They don't want to take a lie detector test. The PR announced that if the PJ wanted them to they would, but it was public knowledge at that time that PJ never use them in course of investigations. It was pure PR knowing it wouldnt be taken up. If they wanted to take one then they could. They don't have to wait for the police.
I personally think they would be daft to as it would turn this whole charade in to more of a Jerry Springer show than it already is.
It woudl mean nothing. Whatever side you've taken in the argument and whatever the results we'd all choose to make of it what we will. I think their PR was foolish to bring it up in the first place as it's just caused more debate - it was possibly staged today to cover up the unpleasant crematorium story.
Each time the PJ search somewhere we'll have one of these deflection stories.
** Oh, it was a joke. Hilarious.

Lie detectors will show a response to the question even if the person doesn't answer the question. It will show different types of anxiety.
The value of a lie detector test depends on the skill of the person interpreting the results. If the people refuse even to be asked certain questions, it will be difficult. Also, if they choose their own lie detector, it would be suspicious.
And, as far as I know, lie detector evidence is still not used in court.

Your going to get conflicting answers as some believe lie detectors to be reliable and some don't. Apparently there are ways around the lie detector to I have heard like medications and I once heard if you put a tack in your foot before the test it will not beable to read your lies. Strange the tack thing for sure.

Lie detectors (polygraphs) measure stress levels by noting changes to the electrical resistance of your skin. Once you know how they work, they are pretty easy to fool. (Think about lying on a isolated beach in the sunshine - true: Think about being attacked by dogs - lie)
Now the McCanns are doctors - work the rest out for yourself.

Lie detectors are notoriously unreliable. That's why they are not allowed in courts.
