Yes the UK should hold a referendum, a referendum which this government will not give because they know it will be a resounding "no".

Although I loathe the Liberal Democrats, at least they had the right idea by giving the British people real choice.

While I would vote yes if there was a referendum I can see no point in holding one. The average member of the British public has little or no interest in politics. You only have to look at the low turnouts for elections. It would simply turn into a media circus with the tabloid press, depending on where their political bias lay, running scare stories to influence how their readers would vote. Surely that can't be good for democracy. I'll accept there probably is an argument for and against but I certainly wouldn't want it being decided by the media.
There's lots of scaremongering about us losing our sovereignty to the EU but one fundamental point is never mentioned. At the heart of British law and politics is the fact that no government can ever introduce a law that will be binding on any future government. We can walk away from the EU anytime we wish and, while I wouldn't recommend that, it is a safeguard that the media don't talk about. After all once they made it common knowledge no one would be interested in their latest scare story.

The french said 'non'.
I always loved brie, the franc, Germany the deutchmark etc and I like the differences between countries(our identities). Yes, let's trade with each other- but also let's keep our own identity. Ofcourse many Europeans love the euro- but we are MUCH better off with the exchange rate for pounds sterling and without it the UK will go under as we have no manufacturing industries anymore.

yes we should- we are a democracy- don't complain about Zimbabwe(unfair and a dictatorship) if we do not have a chance to decide on EU laws that will govern our human rights.

oh and old know all- i'll send the eu homeless surplus round to your back yard!

Yes. Anything else will only prolong the massive anti-European feelings in the UK.
If the majority of Brits votes to carry on inside the EU, than that stands as a clear decision.
And if the majority decides to go it alone and leave the EU, than that has to be accepted as well.
In fact, looking at it from a neutral point of view, both the EU and the UK might well be better off without each other.

Absolutely! No democratic government has the right to surrender any of its country`s sovereignty to any other power without the express Will of the people. This Will can only be expressed by referring it to them - a referendum.
The verbal semantics of politicians in calling the proposed reinvented Constitution a Treaty is a typical politician`s attempt to mislead the public. Thoroughly dishonest! Why do our political "leaders" have so little faith in their nation that they feel they have to surrender to Europe to survive? Where is their pride in the UK? Where are their loyalties?
The British are not such fools as Parliament and the Civil Service seem to think. If Brown does sign up to it without the peoples` mandate, the people might well rise up to to throw him out of office and put him on trial for Treason. I would hope so.

actually now it is extremely sparkling to all and sundry, merely how plenty brush aside and contempt New Labour and the Liberal MP's have for the final voters. I have faith that this may well be remembered come election time and merely wish that the Conservatives can postpone the Lisbon Treaty long adequate interior the abode of Lords, till New Labour gets kicked out of workplace on the subsequent election.

Being part of the EU has HUGE economic benefits.

Trouble is, people can't see psat the end of theri noses and will vote on the 'I don't want Brussels telling me what to do' line.

Not being part of Europe will cuase thousands up thousands of redundancies (look at BMW if you want to see the effect). It is vital to our trade and our economy. I don;t like the flip side, but as a nation, the economy is vital for our well being.

No doubt I'll get all thumbs down from the 'I just don;t like Europe brigadem but don't have a better reason than that'.

Sod the village of Westminster, the voters say YES!

Marrymark: Didn't want to disappoint you so i gave your silly answer a thumbs down. Who wants to be controlled by those unsympathetic to the British way of life? Who wants to be controlled by those who blame others for their mistakes. Just look at what Europe has imposed upon us under the Human rights for scum? Get off your horse of you will live to see disaster.
