Would the "AMD Athlon 64 X2" dual core processor be faster at file serving than a P4 2.8GHZ CPU? I'm just not sure when the 2nd processor would "kick in" with regard to file sharing/serving.

Does the server software affect speed as well, or does the software depend on the CPU speed?

I'll be using this server software: Abyss Web Server X1 (free version - see http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/ ).

Thanks for any knowledgeable answers! :)

Your software link is interesting.. never have seen that one before. BUT, it will work fine on either unit.

If you want better performance get the AMD 64x2 it will roll all over the P4. Even with file sharing/serving. Even if the software doesn't use all 64 bits. It will still run circles around the older technology. The internal dual cores off load automatically so yes it will be faster.

The main thing to remember is that you need plenty of RAM so get more than you think you will use! 2 Gig is ok 4 Gig is better. Whichever you go with more ram will increase performance also.
