Sally Field claims "If women ran the world, there wouldn't be any ***damn wars." Really? I guess Sally never heard of Queen of Elizabeth, who crushed the Spanish Armada and the Scots. Or Imelda Marcos, who brutalized the Philipines while indulging herself. Or Joan of Arc, who wasn't exactly a peacenik. Or Catherine the Great, who beat the crap out of the Ottoman Turks not once, but twice. Or Golda Meir, who defended her country against ten invading armies.

Encantar: Oh yeah, I forgot about Indira Ghandi.
Lynn & Imagine: She's still a great actress, I just think what she said was stupid, not to mention incorrect.
wrack_n_ruin: I read that this morning!

melly: one comment - i think if any competent president (mother, father, no kids, whatever) was running this war, it would have been over by now.

In the early 80´s there were three women premiers. Mrs Thatcher the UK, Indira Ghandi India and Gold Meyer Israel. All three countries were at war at the same time. I guess Sally Field was too young to remember that, but I have a feeling she hasn´t a clue what she´s talking about.

edit ; wrack_n_ruin...You are correct but Mrs Thatcher came to power in the late 70´s as did Indira Ghandi. Hey, it was a long time ago and my timing may be out (senior moment) but the same applies about women Premiers.

Correction: Sally Field said "If MOTHERS ruled the world, there would be no god-damned wars in the first place." Get your facts straight before you go spreading rumors. She just wants peace just like everyone else should want!

I suggest you watch Brothers & Sisters.

What more can I say? Do you not want peace? It doesn't take much to realize the costs of war and the horrible outcome the Iraq war has produced. No one should want war. Taking a look at how many people have died, soldiers and civilians, and the families of these individuals that must deal with the loss of their loved ones, can you tell me that you don't agree that there should be peace and an end to this war?

Gotta love this... "Sally Field Doesn't Speak for Me" (see link)

[Hey Encantar, your chronology is a little messed up -- Golda Meir was in the early Seventies and Sally Field must've been, oh, in her forties in the eighties. Aside from that I like your answer.]

Catherine the Great did not beat anybody but Baltacı Mehmet Pasha. Not in the war area but in his bed. If this stupid event had not taken place, Ottoman army would have beaten Russian army as they had been doing so.

I believe she said "if mothers ran the world".. because so many people are being killed and it's hurting so many families. I can see her point, if mothers were in control i think this war would have been over a long time ago it seems very pointless now.

poor Sally, open mouth insert foot. I cannot condone or condemn what she said. No one wants their child to die on foreign land supporting the ego of an insane leader, I think she was stating that a woman would not be as likely to jump into a war without reason.

I will take a different view of this whole thing,

the chilistic jews (a sect) were of the opinion that the old testiment scriptures taught that even with Jesus himself sitting on the throne in Jerusalem, man was so sinful that God INCARNATE on earth could not control them.

the new testiment (revelation more specifically) seems to bear this out.

so put a mother on the world leadership slate and she will plunge us into war as fast as anyone if not faster. people are people.

Anyone honestly want hillery (that mother) in the oval office?

Ms Field is an actress, not a history teacher. Besides, this is the here and now. What you object to, is the forum she used to state her opinions. Live with it!

No, she doesn't have a clue. However, back when the Cuban-backed Ethiopian government was exploiting it's own starving people, she privately denounced a blurb she did for Live Aid, so she's not all bad.
