You aren't likely to get a signal that far out. Though wireless signals do travel further over water... (because of less resistence) its a mater of maybe 100 feet, not miles. They have satellite wireless, but it's expensive. Or you could just buy a card for your PC and use that.

Hard to say. I remember when we left St. Petersburg, Florida for Texas across the Gulf. My cell phone worked until the buildings disappeared on the horizon. Had to get up top after we were further out. But, that is a large city. If, you off the coast of some small area it may not be as good. Even in the intercoastal waterway you will have many dead areas. I guess it just a matter of where the towers are. I going to get wireless when I find my sailboat to buy or look into other options. I know they have Satellite phones work anywhere in the world and have Internet, but, these are very expensive. Most are used for expedition/research type work.

You can buy a single side band radio that can allow for a internet connection. You can also buy a satellite system that will have internet. Your cell phone company has aircards, but you would have to be near an antenna for that to work. Some marinas have a wireless network you can get on.

Check with SSB or even a Cell modem if you are that close to shore. Anchored in the harbor, you may or may not get wireless depending on availability and signal strength. Don't rely on it.
