I won't say his best days are behind him and he is over the hill or any of that crap, but no the Mets do not need him. It is true, he is no longer a position player. I mean if he had to he could be put at first or third, but it is hard to crouch behind the plate like that for a young guy nevermind a player like Piazza. He should stay in the AL because he can still hit the ball, and if injuries or something occur fill in at a position. Kind of like what Barry Bonds should be doing.

Players not on a team's roster by Sept 1 cannot play in the playoffs. Sorry but rules are rules.
Anyways, a poor fielding catcher is not a great option for the playoffs. Piazza will remain in AL where he can DH.

And at what position would you put him? He can't catch, he can't play first base, the thought of him in the outfield is truly terrifying, and the National League still won't wise up and put in the designated hitter.
And, of course, Piazza has never come within two games of a World Championship, and only once has he played on a team that has even won a Pennant. He is not the answer.

At this point, the Mets are in a similar situation to the Giants: an old team getting older. To simply luring aging free agents with huge contracts simply because you are a big market team is an admission that your farm system is not very good and you are unable to build from within. Consistency from season to season is hard to achieve in baseball without a solid influx of younger talent. The historically successful franchises (Dodgers, Yankees, Braves, etc.) did it with a good mix of younger "home-grown" players, with only a key free-agent or two added as needed.

They could get him cheap, but they wouldn't be able to use him for the playoffs. If a player has not appeared on your roster before September 1st call ups, then they are unable to play in the playoffs. They do that so teams that are not going to make the playoffs don't trade away their top stars to teams who are going to make the playoffs.

I don't think Piazza wants to catch anymore. He'll stay in Oakland as a DH.

Absolutely not. Mike Piazza can't make that pickoff throw and we can't take that risk of having guys in scoring position.
