I almost shot a 12 year old kid. I was sitting in my vehicle outside of an Iraqi Police Station and a bunch of kids were crowding my vehicle. One kid threw something the size of a baseball in my back window. Immediately all the kids ran. I jumped out of the vehicle thinking it was a grenade. I drew my 9mm and took aim. Just as I was about to pull the trigger, I looked over my shoulder to see what he threw. It was a wad of paper. That kid had no idea how close he came to death that day. Later I was thinking about it and I still don't know what bothers me more. The thought of how I would have felt if I had shot him over a piece of trash, or the thought of how quickly I reacted and drew down on him, seeing him as a target and not a 12 year old kid. I thank God that I don't have to live with the guilt of killing that kid over nothing.
