My papa is 99 yrs old, grandma is 90 yrs old. The only visitor they have most days is home health nurse. They both say she went to get $5 out of papa's wallet to reimburse her for some razors she picked up. She says she laid it back on the table. They weren't paying much attention to her but after she was gone-about 15 min-they noticed the wallet was gone. We have looked EVERYWHERE-the wallet IS gone. We filed a police report but home health agency won't do anything. Don't they have insurance for things like this? $900 is a HUGE amount to them-plus they won't trust any other nurse now. What are our options?

The same thing happened to us.Police could do nothing. It was her word against ours. They weren't really that concerned anyway.Homeowners insurance should cover the loss.Minus the deductible. The sad part is she's probably still doing it.

Home Health Agencies usually must be licensed and are regulated by the state. If the home health agency is not responding, then you need to try calling the licensing board. In addition, you might try and find out if the home health agency is bonded. If they are, this means that there is an insurance company out there somewhere. As for the name of their insurance agency to file a claim.

I would also follow up with the police department. In some states a theft of $900 could be considered a felony. In addition, I hope that you have cancelled the credit cards (if any) that were in the wallet, as well as making sure that if their social security cards were in the wallet (Lord, I hope not) that you place a possible fraud alert on their credit records. Identity theft to seniors is alltogether too common.

I presume they are on social security. Make sure that if they aren't able to handle their own finances, that you are listed as representative payee. This will allow you to receive the checks and pay their bills accordingly. You also may need to eventually be appointed a guardian.

If you are really concerned, you need to consult an attorney who specializes in Elder Law, which is dealing with issues facing senior citizens. For a referral, contact your local or state bar association.

I would report it to the police.

I would also report it to the Home Health Care Agency which employs the nurse.

Finally, if in the United States, I would report it to the County Agency on Aging. If there is not an agency on the county level, contact your state government. In Pennsylvania, I would report it to the Attorney General's Office. In Texas, you would report it to the Department of Family and Protective Services.

Stealing from older people is a form of "elder abuse". Not all elder abuse is physical, some of it can be financial.

There are attorneys and law firms that specialize in prosecuting elder abuse. If necessary, you may need to engage the services of the lawyers.

If it's cash...there's not much anyone can do because they can't prove anything. Shouldn't there be surveillance cameras in those rooms? I worked in a nursing home and we had them everywhere to make sure the elderly were properly being taken care of.

I think it is a bad idea for them to keep that much cash around their house. There should be bonded home health care workers. I think it would be difficult to prove in small claims court.

If they were stupid enough to leave it lying around and they don't have a family that makes the effort to take care of them, what did you expect.
I would take the word of the nurse over all of you!
I'd look at a family member first
