I think early metal groups like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest were very melody-orientated. Nowadays the tune has been lost, and it's all about thrashing big chords. Anyone recommend any accessible, melodically orientated metal like the two I have just mentioned? thanks.

Iron Maiden
KISS
Blue Oyester Cult
Rainbow
Deep Purple
Blackmore's Nights (Deep Purple offshoot with Richie Blackmore)

Iced Earth
Hammerfall
Sonata Arctica
Blind Guardian
Echoes of Eternity
Dragonforce (Dual guitar melodies)
Demons & Wizards (BG singer & IE Rythm Guitarist collaboration)

Gamma Ray and Helloween are good too.
Helloween has been around for a long time and are considered to be the progenators of Power metal. Their newest Album is amazing.

All Modern metal which has a much more melodic focus.
Iced Earth's new Singer is Tim "Ripper" Owens of Judas Priest fame. He's on the last 2 Iced Earth albums.

Echoes of Eternity just put their first album out in Feb, and are VERY melody oriented.

Look up a list of power metal bands in Wikipedia. You won't be dissappointed.

I couldn't agree with you more! What they consider to be metal these day's isn't metal! I was flipping through some internet radio stations and there was one called "metal". Assuming it was going to be jam packed full classic tunes from bands such as Ronnie James Dio, Judas Priest, and Nazareth, I tuned in and was mortified at the total CRAP that was being played. Every single song had the same distorted chord over and over. Talent went clean out the window, and it upsets me. I live for classic metal. Their creative lead guitar riffs are out of this world. Im a HUGE 80's hair band fan and live for great music.

ROCK ON!

Well, there's always Blue Oyster Cult. That's about as early a metal as you can find, but it is accessible and melodic. Once you get past the classics like Godzilla and Cities on Flame, you'll discover little gems like ETI.

Poison The Well
Across Five Aprils
Avenged Sevenfold (if you want to call them metal)

It's matter of tastes. I use to listen to nearly every kind of music since I was 8 to 9. I'm 47, today.

I set the limits to groups such as AC-DC, Iron Maiden, Motorheads, Kiss, Gun and Roses; and earlier: Alice Cooper, The New York Dolls.

Harder than that category brings us in the "raw noise" and "violence-makers" categories, in my opinion.

Given the names you gave, I believe I don't know much more than you, and since you seem to enjoy this style more than any other else, I surely know less than you.

So I just agreed with you on a definition of Hard Rock.

Check out Uriah Heep, King Crimson (In the Court of the Crimson King - one of the best rock albums ever), and, if you like weird, the Edgar Broughton Band.

i read through the band names on the previous posts and most that i know have already been mentioned. but does Twisted Sister qualify? Black Flag and The Ramones were a little more on the punk side but were loud. how about:
Scorpions
Ratt
Def Leppard
Motley Crue
Iron Maiden
Quiet Riot
Motorhead
Anthrax

can't think of anymore.

I would try bands like Nightwish http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdZn7k5rZLQ

Blackmore's Night
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ia-iG6iH9a4

and For My Pain
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80bb6M7oumc

And if that fails then just buy up the back catalogue of Rainbow, Led Zepplin and all the other classic metal bands.
