Izzy made a very convincing case, but he didn't quite finish the story. Yes the Core 2 Duos are better for raw gaming performance, no one can logically dispute that. But lets dig deeper. Of those 11 CPUs that are on top in the chart he showed you, the cheapest is the E6550 (labeled incorrectly as E6650 by Tom's) and it is about $175. The highest performing AMD on that chart, coming in right after those top 11, is the 6000+, which is priced at $165.

So basically it comes down to this, the processors have all been out long enough now that prices have basically stabilized to performance, the more you pay, the better the performance. So if you are on a budget, AMD is still definately a viable option.

The thing you should be considering is this: the prices of comparable products. When you buy Intel, you are paying more for the name than the extra value of the product, if any, and usually, it is not very much anyway.

That's one reason Intel cannot get the monopoly that MS has with windows. There are other operating systems out there, even free ones. But, the majority of people believe Windows
is better and more efficient. Do you really think someone would pay MS for something if they could get a comparable product for free.

Buy the AMD and spend the money you save on an extra game or two or three.

Man, people should not answer when they don't have a clue.

It's UNDISPUTED that the current Core 2 based chips DESTROY AMD's aging Athlon64 based chips (this is why AMD chips are so cheap). Not that AMD chips are garbage (I'm running an overclocked dual-core Opteron), there is just no reason to use one if you're building a new PC that's going to be used for gaming or any other CPU intensive apps.

See the top 11 chips on the chart? Core 2 chips.

Even at the sub $90 mark, an overlocked Pentium (Core 2 based) e2160 will overclock to rival e6750 performance.

And looking at the chart above, you'll notice an e6750 is better at everything (including gaming) than ANY current AMD chip that you can buy.

right now intels got the best highest in processor. but if you dont want to shove out like $600 for the processor alone then well almost every step of the way AMD has got a better or equal processor. really all i use is AMD they do twice the work in one cycle then Intel dose and are normally cheeper to buy. iv got a Dual core AMD athlon 3800+ and its seems to run my games with no problem. i can even run other programs like Messenger or the internet at the same time. and the motherboard and processor only cost me $120. but i should also note i only used Intel up till i started building my own computer.

Right now, intell core2 extreme is the best. However, AMD and Intell keep going back and forth so you can expect AMD to come up with something to match or beat Intel at some point and the cycle will continue.

AMD and intel are roughly the same. For instance. an AMD 3300 is about the same give or take as an intel 3.3 ghz.
