I always used cool mist humidifiers for my little girls. Warm, moist air is a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. Cool air is better, and it doesn't make the room feel like you are in the jungle.

All the new things I've heard are for cool mist humidifiers, but I grew up on regular warm mist and use it for my son. I think one of the main concerns is burns, but I never leave my son in a room unsupervised with a humidifier (or any time for that matter, he's a terror!)

It depends on what you want it for. If your air is really dry you would want to use a cool mist humidifier. I only use a warm one when my boys are sick, if helps them breath better. I hardly use it so I don't have to worry about the germs that can build up in it and besides if you take proper care of it, it's not a worry. Safety experts say not to use a warm one because kids can burn themselves on them so make sure they can't burn themselves.

My Pediatrician always recommends the cool mist humidifier.

Cool mist. Warm is a breeding ground for bacteria. Plus, as baby gets older and sticks his/her fingers in front of it, there won't be the possibility of a burn.

I think it's debatable. Some say that the warm water can harbor more bacteria. You just have to change it often. I have twin preemies, and the preemie book recommended warm mist.
