I have an honours degree, and you'd think I'd know for certain, but as far as I'm aware it's the degree course you sign up for and if you take an honours degree and pass you have an honours degree. If that makes sense.

An honours degree is the course you sign up for, most UK degrees are honours degrees. The lowest pass rate for an honours degree is a third class. After that you can be awarded an ordinary degree and after that it's a fail.

A British honours degree is equivalent to an American 4 year degree.
The Honours title will not be awarded for passes of less than Third Class.
So basically if you don't pass your exams with Honours, you will get an ordinary degree.

As it was explained to me when I took a degree you can do the studying and take the exams and if you pass them you get an ordinary degree but if you do a dissertation and it is good enough you get an Honours Degree !st 2.1 2.2 or 3rd depending on how good the dissertation is together with your total marks in the exams

The Honours part of a degree relates to the dissertation.
This is a piece of work usually between 5,000 and 20,000 words completed in your final year.

Different university have different rules in regarding honours classification, you should read your university student handbook and find it out. In UK, you receive an honour on your degree if you pass all the exams in your final year at first attempt and also having passed all your first and second year subjects.
