I bought a mum at wal-mart in a small planter I guess you would call it. I don't have a green thumb, and my mum is dying...can it be saved? There were a few days that it didn't get water and now its turning brown. How long to mums usually last and do they need to be planted in the ground?

JUSR CUT ALL THE BROWN BACK AND IT WILL COME BACK OUT. EVERYTIME IT BLOOMS AND THE BLOOMS, CUT THEM BACK AGAIN. THEY WILL KEEP ON BLOOMING IF YOU KEEP THEM CUT BACK. I USUALLY BUY THE MARKED DOWN MUMS AT WALMART AND TAKE THEM HOME AND CUT THEM BACK. THEY COST ALOT LESS FOR THE SAME PLANT.

a hardy mum will do better when planted in the ground. they need lots of water and sun. they don't last long in a container. find a nice sunny spot and keep it waterd. at least until the roots take hold. it will last for years and grow bigger enabling you to split it.
