This is a really sweet idea. Mobiles you buy at Walmart or baby stores would be safer than a homemade one, but if you are careful to use short strings and no sharp objects then you should be o.k.

Here's an idea for making a mobile from some simple materials that would rest on the rails of the crib. You could also use nylon or cotton cord to suspend it from the ceiling, but just make sure it is secure so the baby doesn't get tangled in the cord if it falls down.

1. Get a long dowel rod (at least 12mm, ½", diameter) or even a yardstick to use as bar from which to suspend a cross-piece for the baby mobile.
2. Fix this dowel or yardstick (suspender bar) to the top of the crib rails approximately over the Baby's chest. If you suspend it from the ceiling then tie a piece of cord, a little longer than the dowel, to each end of the dowel to tie the cord from the ceiling to. Again, it would be safer not to suspend it from the ceiling.
3. Use a piece of cardboard or plastic tube, wooden clothes hanger (removing the wire hook) or even a stiff rubber hose as the crosspiece. No sharp objects allowed.
4. Tie a strong piece of cord, only 3 or 4 inches long, to the middle of the crosspiece. Hang the mobile by tying the other end to the suspender bar.
5. Tie a short piece of twine, only a couple of inches long, to each end of the mobile's crosspiece.
6. Tie small objects to the end of the strings tied to the crosspiece. The object must dangle higher than the distance of Baby's outstretched hand when lying in the crib.
7. Tie other small objects to the same crosspiece, making sure the crosspiece still balances.
8. Putting a toy or two within the baby's reach will let the baby make the mobile move, but the baby should not be left alone with the mobile once he starts to be able to pull himself up.

Baby Mobile Tips
#1) The best objects to hang from the baby mobile's crosspiece are... colorful booties, blocks, rattles, squeaky toys, small plastic bottles, and teething rings. You can use almost any child-safe object as long as it's colorful, have different textures and contrasts light and dark. You can even tie colorful ribbons (less than 3 inches long) to old and dull toys. You can also use magic markers and color cardboard shapes with various geometric patters.

#2)Tie fewer objects to the crosspiece at a time, but change them more often. Changing the objects once or twice per week eliminates over stimulation and also keeps your baby's curiosity and interest for much longer.

Use straw. It is light weight and moves with any air. If it falls on the baby's head from 11 ft it will not hurt him.
