Excelling at gaming is like excelling at sports or any other competitive endeavor. Obviously, you must practice (that should be the easy part).

But getting the most out of your practice will give you an edge. Focus on the fundamentals of your games: being able to execute a certain move sequence in a sports game, or being able to consistently hit your target in a shooter game. You should practice these over and over until you can do them in your sleep...for this kind of practice, forget about your score. Your "score" is how many times you execute a fundamental without making a mistake.

Then, take your show on the road. By that, I mean seek out quality competition. You can only push yourself so hard in racking up new high scores at home, or clobbering local wanna-bes. Get your butt out to major competitions and get beat by the very best. Along with a dose of humility, you'll also learn some of their tricks, and perhaps that will inspire you to come up with some of your own.

Know your game, know the rules, be a good sport, don't get your teammates killed, try not to insult people asking simple questions, if you don't know the answer don't say anything, do your best to help others, and don't act like you know everything.

throw your life completely away as you know it right now and spend all of your time awake playing video games. it all depends on the type of games you play though, but seriously, a lot of people do this with games like warcraft. i wouldn't be suprised if some of them haven't seen daylight in months...
