Now, don't get me wrong: New England probably did deserve to be punished by the commissioner for getting caught videotaping New York's defensive staff as it signaled plays in to its players. But a first-round draft pick? Methinks the punishment doesn't fit the crime.
Is this really worse, for instance, than Mike Tice scalping Super Bowl tickets? Or a Detroit assistant coach getting caught naked at a drive-in? It's common knowledge (trust me) that teams look at defensive signals through binoculars, and have been doing so for years. That the Pats took another step, and started taping them, is a clear violation of an NFL edict. But make no mistake: they're not the only people trying to learn their opponents' signals. That's a practice as tried and true as eye black.
So is the fact that they used videotape so heinous that we should have 31 first-round draft picks in the '08 draft, instead of 32? Let me put it this way: There's no way on Earth the commissioner takes away the Patriots' first-rounder if they hadn't had two (one from San Francisco, and their own). But because the Pats did have two, Roger Goodell could "make an example" of them, and show his critics that he's not the butt-boy of Bob Kraft, one of Goodell's biggest supporters on his way to winning the commissioner's job. The world will keep spinning on its axis, but this heavy-handed punishment does not fit the crime.

I think no he shouldn't be fired. But I do think the NFL didn't do enough for this problem. I thought the Pats would loose 2 #1 picks in the 2008 draft. And Belichick would have been suspended for 3-4 games. The Pats loosing a first round pick in the 2008 draft is nothing. They have 2 picks in the first round anyway.

No he wont be fired, but i think he should have suspended for the entire season w/o pay. & i too wonder if they really deserved to win those 3 superbowls or if they cheated then too. To be honest, i thought this whole thing with the pats n cheating all began back when they played the raiders in the playoffs, most of those calls that went in the pats favor just seemed like the game was rigged for them to win

Real winners don't cheat. He should be fired and the Patriots should have their Super Bowl trophies confiscated and given to the second-place teams (the REAL winners).
Belichick is the Barry Bonds of pro football.

Shouldn't Shawn Merriman be kicked out of the league, shouldn't Mangini be fired, Shouldn't Mike Shanahan be fired and the denver broncos auctioned (whole front office was involved in their violation of salary cap), Shouldn't John Madden and Jack Tatum be arrested and tried for breaking Darryl Stingly's neck, Shouldn't Ricky Williams not be allowed to be re-instated, shouldn't we all cry every day for the rest of our lives, Shouldn't people like you who expect Bill Belichick to responsible to raise their kids be forced not to have any.

The NFL should have zero tolerance for cheating. Belichick should have been suspended indefinitely from the NFL. Pats fans want to act like it's no big deal, but if the Colts had been caught cheating, they would be all over this.

He should be banned for life like the Chicago White Sox players were for fixing the World Series.

Hey John, haven't you figured it out yet? Cheating doesn't matter in sports! Look at baseball as well as football. Look at the NBA ref. Every sport has basically shoved it up the *** of all fans! Get over it!!

Yeah what he said; it's over with he won't get fired and if he would get fired and he wanted to coach again almost everybody would want him as a coach in any city in any state, what he did was wrong but just get over it; it happens all the time every coach in the league has stolen signals in some form or another he just got caught. It's like getting a speeding ticket for going two over you were still speeding right.
