That 1.7Ghz (socket 423 or 478) processor is not compatible with the socket of the 800mhz processor (socket 370).

First of all are you sure the new processor is compatible with the socket on your systemboard? If the answer is yes, then of course you will have to change settings in the BIOS AND perhaps jumpers on your motherboard.

Before you attempt this, find the documentation to your motherboard. You will have to set not only the clock speed, but you will have to make sure the voltage for the processor is set correctly.

Given the information, that the age of your computer (800mhz) I seriously doubt you have a jumperless motherboard

Those are 2 completely different sockets. You will need to change the motherboard also. Along with the motherboard change comes a RAM change.

Basically,
See if you can pull the entire motherboard/processor/RAM combo from the 1.7ghz machine and put it in the old.
If the 1.7ghz machine is a working one, just switch to it and use the 800mhz as a backup server, MP3 server, etc...

You can then switch Hard drives, CD-ROMS, etc.. as you please.

It will not work. A Pentium 4 processor will not fit in a Pentium 3 processor socket. They have completely different pins.

You will need to have a motherboard that will support that specific Pentium 4 processor.

You will have to check your motherboard manual, to make sure your motherboard can handel the new proc. My guess is that it won't though as going from p3 to p4 is quite a jump.
