Was a hate crime committed at the point students hung nooses from a tree .
Was it further exacerbated by only a cursory examination and nothing of consequence being done .
In what community do 16 year olds drive around with shot guns and then display them and those who disarm them are the ones arrested .

Tragically a young man was beaten by those who felt as if they had no rights or recourse within the system because of clear signs in the past that nothing would be done to protect their freedoms .

Can you see how events in the past can have tragic results in the future .

Or do you simply condemn 6 young men for beating another and say nothing caused this to happen .

Black people only got their "feelings" hurt, and that is NO EXCUSE to hurt someone physically

The simplest answer to this question: Two wrongs do not make a right...ever...regardless of past history or circumstances. While the hanging of the nooses in the tree was indeed poor judgement on the part of the white teenagers, it did not physically harm anyone. The retailatory action from the black teenagers was physical and I have not read in any of the news accounts that the teenager who was beaten had anything to do with the noose hangings. This was an opportunity for the black community in this area to be the 'bigger' person and handle the situation in a civil manner instead of animalistic.

In retrospect, the black teenagers could have made a statment simply by using those nooses and making some white dummies to hang from them....what would have been the reaction from the white community then?

What were they supposed to do to those who hung the nooses, jail them for it? Because that is the only thing that the Black community would have accepted. So because they didn't jail someone for what is a repulsive prank, but a prank nonetheless, this gave 6 people the right to beat the hell out of some guy? Why don't we just give them permission to burn down the town as response to a couple of nooses in a tree?

Personally I think the Jena6 just saw an opportunity to act out attitudes that they already had,and used incidents up to that point as a justification and excuse.

There were causes. White students hanged a noose from the tree and call black students racial slurs, nobody did anything about it. Unfair? Yes, but that didn't give the black Jena 6 to beat up a boy what they did was wrong and unjustified.

What the three guys did was despicable, there is no question about that.
My understand is that the law could not find anything to charge them with for hanging crosses in the tree. I do believe the school should have taken disciplinary action at that time.
But how you justify the severe beating of a student because of the ignorance of the three is beyond me.
So in your opinion, the means justifies the cause and every time someone uses a derogatory word or visual against me, I have the right to beat them to death.
And I don't care if they are green, orange, black or white.

Rationalizing Criminal behavior is the >WRONG< way to bring about real change.

It is the result of the failure of >Both< cultures, that things like this happen.....it's not the fault of one, or the other....but BOTH!

Unless there is serious, REAL change in how we are raising our children/youth, we are destined to see this same scene repeated over, and over again in the future.

The complete lack of common courtesy, and manors in todays society is a prime example of this. The whole "I'M the center of the universe!" kind of attitude, and the "YOU OWE ME!" style of thinking has got to be taught, reasoned, sweat, or beat out of today's (And future generations) youth/children.

Or we are ALL doomed!

Next thing ya know you'll be saying

BUT THE STUFF WAS O J's
didn't the cause associated with that deal excuse him from obeying the law?
NOand NO to the Jena six.
I don't feel that they should do 20+ years, but they should do prison time----5 years max.

I say that the march on Jena was justified. It brings attention to the problems there. The problem is that one of the boys was tried as an adult while others get away with a slapon the wrist. Prejudice is always wrong and so is the hate that goes with it. It's good that people came to the town and pointed out to the world what was happening there and said it is time for this type of treatment to stop.
And it is certainly time it does. . .

Past actions never justify present crimes. According to the question Should the Jews go on a rampage for the crimes Hitler committed against the I think not!
