It's wonderful. ;) We know a little Giovanni, often shortened to just Vanni or Van (either pronunciation), and it totally suits him. Great choice!
Edited to add: since the above poster mentioned (ok, DECLARED lol) that this name would be cause for ridicule, thought it worth mentioning that I don't know of a single person -- child or adult, for the above-mentioned person ;) -- that's ever thought the name odd, much less made fun of him for it. He's Italian. It's a perfectly normal, even traditional name. We also know children named Serafina, Siobhan, Maeve and Giacomo, and none are cause for ridicule. In fact, with the positive trend toward using less Waspy choices in favor of names that reflect the family's heritage, they're considered perfectly natural, even "cool" options! It's no longer considered a stigma to have a name that might come across as less "Americanized." Obviously that person simply knowns no one under the age of 20. LOL

It's nice, but it really depends on the surname.
Giovanni Rossi sounds authentically Italian; Giovanni Bennett sounds like a nice way to dress up a plainer, more common last name.
But if your surname is Kukowski (and while I'm 3/4 Italian, my maiden name was very clearly not) I think you'd have a discordant match. Giovanni Baumgartner? No.

i like it. It makes me think of actor Giovanni Ribisi. He could go by Vonnie, like Ribisi sometimes does. Do you have a middle name?
How about...
Giovanni Antonio
Giovanni Armando
Giovanni Leonardo
Giovanni Michelangelo
Giovanni Orlando
Giovanni Rinaldo
Giovanni Stephano
I like Giovanni Armando

I LOVE that name - it's one of those that you can only get away with if you are Italian. I had a best friend in sixth grade named Giovanna and I thought it was the most beautiful girls name I had ever heard! Congrats on your baby!
