Niche is sounds like quiche or peach but with an n instead of qu or p respectively. It comes from the French word nicher meaning nest.

You pronounce it as it is without the "e" - nich ( nitch ). You can find out proper pronunciation of words in the dictionary :-)

"Neesh". As it comes from the French "nicher", this is the correct pronunciation.

"Nitch" is one of those terrible North American alterations to a European word. And I say that in the full knowledge that in Britain (and pretty much all English speaking locations outside of North America) we pronounce Lieutenant as "leftenant" for some bizarre archaic reason!

Summing up, both are considered correct in N America but you'll get strange looks and winces from Europeans if you say "nitch"! ;o)

I was always taught it was "Neesh" if you were talking about, for example, a "niche market", that the "nitch" pronunciation was more about something else, like talking about corners, nooks and crannies (small spaces in other words). I could be wrong though, language changes all the time, and that doesn't even count dialect. Either one is in the ballpark. :)

I'm gonna say that you're fine whether you say it as "nitch" or "neesh". The dictionary says "nitch".

Kind of like how some people pronounce the "t" in "often" even though you're really not supposed to, but it's accepted by most people.
