Who ever decided to cut down the tree is a freakin' moron. It's a TREE. Racism isn't going to go away from cutting down a tree. Now a part of nature is gone just because some people are idiots.

I'm uncertain when the tree was cut down, but, in my opinion, it was an over-reaction to a problem better faced otherwise. It was a beautiful tree and should have been left standing, but the powers-to-be thought by cutting it down the problems would forever disappear. How silly is that?
Some residents in Jena might have thought the presence of the tree would instill bad memories to which I say humbug! The pranks of affixing nooses from the tree was immature and thoughtless on the part of the boys that did it.
The verdicts against the six have been overturned--primarily that of Michale--and I suspect the boys will be tried as juveniles instead. This overturn was done before any of the thundering herds of marchers ever climbed aboard the busses.

Our news hear said (I am from Louisiana about 60 miles from Jena) that the Parish School Board decided to cut the tree before this new school year as to remove the reminder of what went on in hopes for a better year.

I think he should be remembered for the most successful attack on United States territory since 1941, for failing to react to the August 2001 warnings that Bin Laden hoped to hijack planes inside the United States. Though we will never know if any of the steps that could have been taken to prevent the attacks - such as increased airport security, more flight marshals, reinforcing cockpit doors or simply warning the flying public to be alert - would have done so there is one unmistakable truth: despite the warnings he did NOTHING! He should be remembered for his reckless assault on civil liberties, as though our freedom and not his incompetence were to blame for the successful attack. He should be remembered for diverting resources from the struggle against those who meant us genuine harm to blunder into an unnecessary war against a penny-ante dictator who was no threat to us. I doubt history will treat him kindly. I suspect we have only scratched the surface in terms of how poorly history will judge him. (BTW, your analysis of why Truman's approval rating was so low at the end of his term is a bit off. His use of the A-Bomb was roundly applauded at the time. Most of his political problems stemmed from the unpopularity of the Korean War & the fall of Chinese mainland to the Communists led by Mao. Of course, China fell because Chang was incompetent & his troops wouldn't fight, but somehow in the atmosphere of the time Truman got the blame.)

To prevent any more fighting over who gets to sit under it. It became a source of racial territory dispute. Now nobody owns the tree because it's gone.

that tree was considered the "white only" tree. The administration rightly consider that tree to be the root of the problem.

Their "reason" was weak. To prevent further tension???Whatever!
They'll just find another tree or maybe a table. The issue still remains, racial separation in that school.
