Any suggestions to keep the cost of train fare down? We are both in our early fourties, one an American citizen, the other a German citizen. We want to leave the 2nd of October and return the 7th.

I'd suggest the night train from Munich to Paris. Get a couchette in whatever class that's comfortable for you. They're all comfortable, just some have 6 bunks and you might be in there with others. (Never any problems for me).
Then from Paris to Ams. there are the fast trains that are pricier than the 6-hour trains. Look on raileurope.com
to check prices for indiv. tickets from Mun. to Par. and Par. to Ams.
If the Grman citizenhas been residing outside of Europe and you two can buy a Saver Pass/Eurail Select pass on
that same website. I always get out the calculator and compare indiv. tickets to passes according to the dates and trips I plan to take, and i pick the cheapest.
As for the final flight, you could do the night train again, like from Dusseldorf (just an hour and a half from amsterdam.)
Cheap flights maybe on easyjet, ryanair, germanwings, but I love trains!

Want to travel from Munich to Paris (train), Paris to Amsterdam (train), Amsterdam to Munich (plane)?

Munich Paris - First the ICE Deutsche Bundesbahn
Then the french high speed train to Paris
( TGV est )

Paris Amsterdam - direct train - french railways
Amsterdam - Munich - should look for a train to Dortmund or Frankfurt-Main ( ICE ) Deutsche Bundesbahn then change for Amsterdam -

European trains are great - don't take planes - they are stupid

Now Google SNCF in english - and then DB in english

if my message is useful don't forget to thank me -

Sure you can take the train to Amsterdam, why not? The police themselves don't bother searching you, they simply use sniffer dogs to find contraband like drugs - you are planning on buying drugs in Amsterdam and bringing them away with you? The dogs will find it within seconds. It's now standard at airports, and I imagine that there are dogs at platforms of train stations and bus stations for transports that originated in Amsterdam. Definitely not smart. It's the kind of thing that gets you blacklisted.

make sure you got your passport when you go to France . And let your german friend get the tickets. It would probably even be cheaper to take the train from Amsterdam to Muenchen.

Viel Spass

check online to see if they have weekend deals on the train fare!
