I have 1997 ford Escort 1.8 zetec, It has no power the engine is running hot and it's costing me a fortune in petrol, this has only started in the last couple of weeks.

The CAT is bent and the exshaust is blowing could this be the cause. Someone told me it might be the air filter but i've changed that and it's made no difference. I dont want to go out and buy a new cat if it turns out the engines worn out.

first check that you don't have any white/cream gunge deposits in your oil .second see if the coolant dose not have any oil deposits in it.if cat was bent before this problem started then it be cylinder head gasket or cracked head or cracked block.look for leaks oil or water anywhere in the engine compartment.fi this dose not answer you question get back to me.

CAT is bent and glowing or blowing? There's your sign! Pull out an O2 sensor the top one and see if the engine revs up better then put 02 sensor back. You might just have a broken up cat converter (insides came apart) When replacing the converter make sure you clean the pieces out of the exhaust with compressed air in the tail pipe and hitting on the mufflers watch chuncks blow out. Here is the problem forcing an engine with broken converter to run blows pieces of the cat converter back into the engine and cyl walls suffer.

many stuff might reason this venture, A defective coil can try this whilst they get warm they give up working. incorrect spark plugs can do it too. A loose floor connector for the pc on the thermostat housing can try this. Any loose or comfortable set connection at cord harness. A defective igniter unit interior the distributor assy can do it too. The ignition activate that style likes to pass undesirable too and it will do something like this. attempt to make notes in this venture like; this is present after 30 miles of driving or 30 min, or after a bump or pot holes on the line and stuff like that. this might help plenty throughout diagnostic. Your tech may additionally pass and pull a splash on the cord harness with the engine working to work out if there is any changes. With a case like this i like to hook some try lights and gauges to different areas of the engine on an identical time as the engine is working and look ahead to that 2d and notice what is going out, gasoline tension or potential on the coil or potential on the injectors ect ect .. stable success and that i desire it enables.

If the E G R valve is sensing incorrectly because of damage to the C A T then it could be the cause of both your problems but check that the electric fan is cutting in for the overheating problem as well

Take the thermostat out and test it,you can run without the thermostat, but it will take a lot longer for the engine to heat up.Next check the cylinder compression. The head gasket may have gone.

Any type of restriction in your exhaust is a bad restriction. Take it to an exhaust shop and have them check it out. If thats not the cause then you are looking at a blowen head gasket.

If your exhaust, especially your Catalytic Convertor has been bent and is a restriction now it will cause the conditon you are describing. I would take it to a good repair shop and have them tell you if it requires any new parts of your exhaust.

I have been a motorist for many years now and have found that Policeman, Bank Managers, Coalminers, Shopowners, people on benefits and many others, are ALL experts on motor cars. Why they ever became Policeman, Bank Managers etc etc beats me.
