The north atlantic oscillation this winter is predicted to be around -1 which means more high pressures. Thus getting colder and drier conditions, similar to those months of 2006. Although the metoffice is unsure. This is because usually after a wet and cold summer like 2007, winters are cold and bitter. There were wet summers in 1962, the famous winter of 1963 followed. same in 1978, wet summer, followed by the cold 1979 winter.
In my opinion, September & October will continue to warmer and drier, November will be colder than average. December, January and February will be cold and dry.

“Mother Nature is once again keeping all of us on our toes,” reveals Editor and Philom., Peter Geiger, “we know she likes to throw curve balls at us from time to time and this winter it looks as though she’s going to reveal a possible split personality.”

This “two-faced” Farmers’ Almanac forecast reveals a colder than normal conditions for the eastern half of the country – chiefly those areas east of the Mississippi –with snowier than normal conditions expected.

For the western half of the country – mainly those areas west of the Mississippi – the overall winter will be milder than normal, with near or below normal precipitation. Quite a change from last year, when cold and stormy weather came blasting.

For areas lying along the Mississippi, the news is less clear-cut, as wild fluctuations in temperature and precipitation are expected throughout the winter.

“Near and along the boundary zone between the mild, tranquil West and the cold, stormy East, we look for some large scale vacillations,” said Caleb Weatherbee, weather forecaster for the Farmers’ Almanac. “From wintry to springlike and back to wintry; almost like a meteorological pendulum undergoing a series of pretty wild swings.”

You can expect a very cold winter, since we are now entering a La Nina year. How cold depends on where you live, in some places, snow is already falling.

The deciduous trees in the Seattle area have already turned and their leaves have fallen completely off.
That is VERY early in the season which indicates that it will be a long, cold winter in that area of the nation, at least.

The caterpillars are extra fuzzy as well. That is another Farmer's Almanac indication of a cold Winter.

Sorry.

Seasons are so badly mixed up and it is hard to know what we will get. After a very bad summer I am hoping for a mild winter but as it is still only September the weather has got chillier. So I hope our winter hasn't started early.

With the ozone layer the way it is, and the way the weather patterns are going now, I'm sorry to say... yes... Unfortunately I think we're gonna have a very bitterly cold winter. I wish it could always be late spring!!! lol

It's gonna get worse before dawn!

I'm afraid I can't tell you no.

This winter is going to be quite a sever one.
The temperature over 'summer' never reached the heights that it normally does for the length of time that it normally does.
Halfway through September and the mornings are already feeling very chill, almost icy.
I suggest making sure that all your pipes are lagged to help prevent damage from freezing.

It's gonna be Bitter!
