Don't freak out.. I know losing weight intentionally during pregnancy is bad not only for your health and saftey but for your childs too but heres the deal.

I am 5'9 and started out this pregnancy at 242 lbs. I am at 238 now and 16 weeks pregnant.

I haven't really changed my diet before I got pregnant any becuase I have read all the horror stories about losing weight during pregnancy... but whats better eating mcdonalds and cheto's during pregnancy and gaining the recommended amount of weight during pregnancy better than eating a healthy balanced diet, excersizing (walking 20 minnutes per day) and losing the weight naturally because I'm not consuming 3500-4000 calories a day?

I guess I just need advice. I don't want to continue eating so unhealthy but I dont want to put me or my baby at risk becuase I lose weight during pregnancy.. even if I am eating a "balanced" diet.

Thank you for all of your replies in advance. I will check back an award best answer as fitted.

1st, CONGRATULATIONS!! It's good you've decided to eat healthier. ALL the nutrients you consume (or lack of them) will 1st go to the baby, and then to you. That includes the important ones...that's why you take the prenatal vitamins. The body's natural design is to protect the baby. That's why Mother's to be become anemic during pregnancy. The iron needs in your diet go to the baby 1st, then to you. If you are eating healthier and exercising, then you are going to loose some weight. It's still early enough in your pregnancy to start changing your habits, and I commend you for doing so. Of course ask with your OB/GYN, but I'll guess they'll be happy you're eating better and exercising.

Good Luck & write back anytime

To be perfectly honest I think what you are doing is right. They say losing weight during early pregnancy is not ok, but you do have some extra to spare ( I beg your pardon if it sounds rude). Exercise and a balanced diet is most important to you right now and if you lose weight in the process, congratulations. My doctors wanted me to eat at least 2000 calories a day, I don't ever think I made that much. The more weight you can keep off now and the fitter you are, the easier your pregnancy will go (hopefully) and you will be more toned up for labor. And the easier it will be afterwards to lose the weight if you keep to your diet and exercise. Good luck to you and keep up the good work.

You need to get your Doctor's advice on this- when you are a larger woman to start with, they may not be so concerned about initial weight loss in the start of pregnancy. Your Doc is really the one to ask about something so serious. I bet he wouldn't mind some weight loss if it's from a healthier diet.

I lost at least 10 pounds at the beginning of both of my pregnancies... The doctors said it was from the morning sickness with my first one but I didn't have morning sickness with my second one so I have no idea... But with my second pregnancy, I have gone up and down through the whole thing... I am 32 weeks and last week I had gained a total of 20 pounds and I weighed a few minutes ago and I have lost 2 pounds... My doctor isn't worried because the baby is healthy...

First youre not supposed to be eating 3500-4000 calories a day, it should be around 2500-3000. When doctors advise that women should be gaining at least 30lbs during pregnancy, theyre referring to women who are at "average" weight for their height. ie. 5'5 150lbs, if youre already over weight, you kind of already have the fat storage there and dont dont have to worry about gaining more weight. Eating healthy is the best you can do, and your baby will come out healthy as well.

overweight women often lose weight while pregnant. You clean up your eating habits and voila, your body decides to use its natural fats stores to feed the baby. I lost over 30 lbs in my first pregnancy before I started gaining it back in the 3rd trimester. As long as your Dr is not concerned then you are fine.
