In a manual it has an essential function-letting you know when to shift. Granted it is ignored once youre familiar with the car, but its needed until then.

In an auto-its just one more stupid thing trying to look cool and sporty. Its like a spoiler on a FWD car, or a "sport package" that adds an 800 lb sunroof and another hundred pounds of extra panneling and skirts that serve no actual function.

The speedometer shows the speed of the vehicle on the road whereas the RPM meter shows the rate of revolution per minute of the fly wheel of the engine. It has no relation with the speed of the vehicle. .While moving ,if the vehicle is in low gears, the RPM meter will show higher count cautioning you to switch to appropriate gear or to go light on gas. The higher is RPM reading, it means higher fuel consumption and more heating of the engine.

In an automatic you really don't . A car with stick, you do. It lets you know how many RPM the engine turning. If you red line or exceed it you can damage your car. I really don't look at mine because you know by the sound of the engine and feel of the car where you're at.

Rpm counters are used to change gears at correct revolutions in manual vehicles, but it really depends on your driving style whether you want to utilise this or not
