I mean we all know they are not real life but they do cover a lot of topics that are relevant to our society, and sometimes its a good bit of escapism. I'm sick of people saying 'Its not real you know, get a life' I have a life thanks, but if i want to kick back and watch some tv after a hard days work then i will! And the acting in soaps can be awesome especially when there is a really emotional story. I go out, i go to gigs, sometimes the theatre and i have lots of friends, but I still like my soaps. Soap haters, get over it, we are all differant.

Lisa M, just because you watch soaps does not mean you are thick. However someone so narrow minded like you probably is.

Its called ESCAPISM.

I love my soaps too. People who knock them are narrow minded. How are soaps any different from outrageous plots on other tv shows and movies? They are all escapism, they aren't reality, they aren't supposed to be but sometimes the topics are realistic and hit close to home and are socially relevant.Soaps are my break from the chaos, I can focus on the chaos of others and not my own!

I have nothing against the soaps as such & I did used to watch Eastenders religiously.
However, I used to hate being a slave to the schedule & I'm pleased that I set myself free.
I know people who watch Eastenders, Corrie, Emmerdale & Hollyoaks all the time. That's a lot of hours in front of the box emotionally investing in other people's "lives" when perhaps the time would be better spent doing something with their own lives.

What a load of old tosh! Talk about melodramatics! It's mind numbing boring, depressing and beyond belief! The acting is worse than a school's Nativity play and what's hilarious about this is that they give out awards for this unbelievable nonsense. When I change the channel there's more of this unintelligible rubbish! The story lines are weak and they're written so quickly and badly you would think a not too bright ten year old has done it for his/her homework. Escapism for me is turning this dribble off not watching it. Quality not quantity is what I like to watch!

Have a star as you won't find any in the soaps.

You're entitled to what you watch but soaps are pretty dull and there's too much of this tripe on the television and it brings the standard of good quality viewing down. The characters are very two dimensional, none of their personalities seen to have any sense of humour apart from the laughable overacting! Anthony B has hit the nail right on the head with his answer and he deserves the 10 pts.

I agree with you, I am also a fan of soaps, I watch Eastenders, Coronation Street, and I usually watch Emmerdale, although I have started to go off Emmerdale since the Tom King palava. I also think that the acting is very good, especially the emotional storylines, I loved all the Stella and Ben stuff in Eastenders, it was uncomfortable viewing, but very well acted. I do think there is a lot of snobbery where soaps are involved, people tend to look down their noses at people who watch them, I don't know why.

Like you, I also have a busy life, I have a husband and a son, and plenty of friends, but its great at 7.30pm of an evening when you can put your feet up and watch a great soap!

they are not realistic at all and if you need to be given clues on how to live your life from a soap then you are even sadder than i thought its not escapism its a social mechanism to keep thick people off the streets between the hours of 7 and 9

I love my soaps, I watch the main 3, Corrie, Eastenders and Emmerdale, and I hate to miss one. I take no notice of people who slag off soaps, we can't all like the same stuff and lets face it they're the ones missing out on the brilliant work that is coming out lately. There has been some great acting, fantastic storey lines. Its all make believe, but if that was a bad thing, then no one would read books

I reckon that there are plenty of 'Closet soap people' that just won't admit they watch them so slag 'em off instead. How come some will tell you "oooooh you don't watch that rubbish do you"......."it's not real you know".....etc etc etc BUT they still always seem to know what is going on in which ever soap you are talking about and give an opinion. I don't mind their opinions they are entitled to them but own up and say Yes I watch the SOAPS.

I love 'em all, Corrie, Eastenders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks you name them. But I also like plenty of other programmes including factual documentaries and I'm a footie fan.

8.20pm - Strange how alot of us have 3 Thumbs down on this one !!!

Some of the story lines are so pathetic. I used to watch Coronation Street but it became so stupid I just lost interest in it. I don't condemn others for watching soaps, but it's not for me anymore.

Goes to show what the actors in soap can do,they are so bad they are not elsewhere. Apart from whats his name that's done the programme on gangs but he does not have to act in that.
Badly written dribble
Yes they do cover poignant topics.
Yes we are all different.
Why oh we do we have to have a omnibus editions at weekends suppose TV companies strugge to fill the space.
